October 2018 Meeting Report

Thanks to everyone who came out for our Music & Computers night. It was a fun night of epic SingStar performances, SID chip sonics, Amiga MODs and demos, MIDI modules, Donkey Konga, Music Mousing and even a sighting of a rare Atari Falcon in action. Ewan and George did a great job with tea and coffee and getting eftpos up and running.

From next year on we'll be offering annual paid memberships, but you'll hear more about that when we have the details finalised. November's event will be 'un-themed' meaning all retro systems are welcome. We'll see you then!

Tiny Launcher - A great front-end for WHDLoad on the Amiga

I thought I’d mention a nice bit of Amiga software that I’ve been using for a while now. It’s called Tiny Launcher and it serves as an attractive front end for WHDLoad games and demos.

The big advantage of a launcher like this is that you never have to dive into Workbench or even plug in a mouse to run your favourite WHDLoad games or demos (you might have two joysticks permanently plugged in for example). Navigation is done with the joystick or arrow keys and when you’re finished with a program it will exit back to the Tiny Launcher interface. Hitting escape will kick you back to the Workbench.

I have the program set to launch on boot. This is achieved with a few simple lines in the start-up sequence or user-startup:

This is the directory I point Tiny Launcher to for games:

Unfortunately I don’t have the space to keep my Amigas out all the time, but it's nice to know that when I pull my A1200 out of the cupboard its ready to load a quick game without ever having to touch the mouse or engage with the GUI.

Definitely worth a look if you’re a WHDLoad user.

Tiny Launcher is written by Michael Gibs and can be downloaded from Aminet.

Adelaide Amiga 30 Meeting coming up

Just a quick reminder that the next meeting is coming soon, on Monday 25th May, 2015.

More information about the Adelaide Amiga 30 meeting is available on the Next Meeting section of this very website!

We aim to bring as many different Classic Amiga and Next Generation Amiga systems as possible to this event to celebrate the Amiga's 30th birthday!

Above is an Amiga 1000 with Gotek Virtual Floppy drive (uses USB stick with virtual Amiga ADF Floppies). This can also boot the Kickstart from the USB stick too.

As an additional taster, shown above is the Next Generation Amiga Sam460CR (Left) running AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, and an Apple Powerbook G4 running MorphOS 3.7. Both systems are shown running the upcoming Wings Battlefield game by Cherry Darling - which can have up to 4 players on each system and can also play against each other in multiplayer LAN games!

We hope to see as many of you there as possible, it should be a great event!
